The nose is the most prominent feature of the face. It is no surprise that it is the most common object for cosmetic surgery nationwide. Rhinoplasty by cosmetic surgeons at Chesapeake Plastic Surgery Associates can modify the shape or alter the size of the nose and adjust the size of the nostrils. Birth defects, injuries, and respiratory problems can also be corrected with rhinoplasty. Our Maryland cosmetic surgeons at Chesapeake Plastic Surgery Associates perform many successful rhinoplasty procedures each year.
Rhinoplasty by our Maryland cosmetic surgeons is usually performed under local or light anesthesia in an outpatient setting. Rhinoplasty is a safe and effective form of cosmetic surgery. This surgery begins when the skin of the nose is elevated and lifted away from the bone and cartilage framework beneath. The bone and cartilage is then shaped and sculpted as desired. Some doctors elect to make the incision from inside the nose, depending on the nature of the surgery. The skin is then re-draped over the altered nose structure. A surgical splint is then applied to help your nose maintain its shape. Soft splints or nasal packs may be placed in the nostrils for additional stability. Patients report little discomfort caused by this splint.
Recovery time can range for the rhinoplasty procedure. Maryland patients usually have their splint removed in two days to a week. For most of our patients who undergo this cosmetic surgery, approximately 80 percent of the swelling will have reduced after three weeks following the surgery. At this point, the nose generally looks much better than the pre-op situation; however, it still requires another six months to one year for all of the remaining swelling to be resolved and for the final result to be apparent. Some cosmetic surgery patients can return to work in as early as five to seven days. Revision surgery may be required in approximately 10 percent of these excessively large noses.
