Botulinum toxins have been used to treat cranial nerve disorders and eye and neck spasms for more than 20 years. With the recent FDA approval for cosmetic use, the drug is used to smooth facial wrinkles. BOTOX® Cosmetic is currently the only FDA approved form of botulinum toxin used for cosmetic treatments. Two other botulinum toxin-based substances, Myobloc™ and Dysport®, are under FDA review for cosmetic use. BOTOX® Cosmetic paralyzes muscles by blocking nerve impulses, smoothing the skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
More than 850,000 people received BOTOX® Cosmetic injections in 2001 and well over two million did last year, representing 15 percent of non-surgical cosmetic surgery procedures. According to the ASPS, 55 percent of all BOTOX® Cosmetic procedures were performed on people between the ages of 35 to 50.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is suitable for eliminating crow s feet, fine lines, forehead wrinkles, and other signs of aging. Results last up to three to four months, although the more it is used, the weaker the muscles become - increasing the amount of time that may pass between treatments.
